Caring for your Engagement Ring
How To Take Care of Your Engagement Ring: The Do's and Don'ts
Proper engagement ring care should be a top priority after your significant other pops *the question*. You've spent years dreaming of the perfect ring, so now that it's a permanent part of your daily lifestyle, you'll want to ensure it stays just as shiny and sparkly as the day you received it. Just like your love, your ring is meant to last a lifetime which requires giving it some TLC. We've put together a list of the top do’s and don'ts to help you take care of it.
DO Purchase Insurance One of the first things you should do after receiving your ring, besides showing it off to all your family and friends of course, is purchasing jewelry insurance. Because your sparkler is now your most important piece of jewelry (not to mention expensive) insurance is important to protect it in the event that it becomes lost, stolen or damaged. Here at Providence Diamond, we recommend Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group. The process is simple and sweet. All you have to do is go online, fill out some information, choose a plan and you're done!
DON'T Remove Your Ring in Public While it might be tempting to remove your ring while washing your hands in public, you MUST resist that urge. The possibility that you might forget your ring, drop it down the drain or, worse, have it stolen, is too great of a risk to take. Keep your ring on, you can always clean it later!
DO Keep Your Ring Clean Diamonds look their best and sparkle the most when they are clean! Between work, the gym, planning a wedding and a social life, finding the time to come visit us at the store is not always possible. Because of this, we recommend purchasing a diamond cleaning pen or cloth. This way you’re able to clean your ring yourself when it’s lacking that sparkle you lust for.
DON'T Expose Your Ring to Harsh Chemicals ALWAYS remove your ring when cleaning or touching harsh chemicals. Cleaning agents such as bleach and even some chemicals in hair products can not only dull the finish of your ring but actually harm the diamond itself. We recommend keeping ring dishes around the house to put your ring in for this purpose.
DO Remove Your Ring During Workouts The last thing you want to worry about is damaging your engagement ring when you’re at the gym. Not only could you risk scratching your band, but you could also break a prong, or, even chip your stone. To ensure it’s safety, remove your ring prior to breaking a sweat. If you insist on wearing something while working out, a silicone band is a great option.
DON'T Wear It Applying Lotions or Make Up While moisturizers, lotions and sunscreen are fantastic for your skin, the same can not be said when it comes to diamonds. Make it part of your routine to keep your ring off until your beauty routine is finished. This will protect your ring from unwanted build-up that can dull the appearance of your sparkly accessory.
Visit Your Jeweler You take your car in for an oil change every three months. Brakes are checked, tires are rotated and your car is examined for it’s overall performance. So why not treat your ring with the same kind of love? Our Bridal Department recommends visiting us here at Providence Diamond every few months so we can make sure the prongs are tight, the diamond isn' lose and that there are no cracks in the shank. No appointment is necessary, just stop in whenever you’re in the area.
DON'T Swim There are many dangers when it comes to swimming with your ring. A pool contains chlorine which can discolor your mounting by causing the rhodium plating on white gold to wear off. And we can' forget the fact cold water shrinks our fingers. An already loose engagement ring is much easier to slip off while swimming in a cold ocean or pool. While a ring can be found in a pool, you won’t be as lucky in an ocean.
DO Safely Store Your Ring Being cautious goes along way when it comes to taking care of your favorite new accessory. When you need to take it off, make sure to put it in a secure location. We recommend having a go-to spot whether it be a draw or a ring dish. This way if you’re ever wondering where you put it, you know exactly where to look.
DON'T Wear Your Ring To Bed Depending on the shape and size of your ring, wearing it at night while sleeping can be a bad idea. You can catch a prong on your bedding, increase the chances of getting it caught in your hair and can even scratch yourself or your partner. Leave your ring on the bedside table for the night and put it back on in the am.
